Netflix in May — It’s a BIG Month

Canadians — we had our fair share of winter, second winter, fake spring, third winter, and half summer. It’s our turn. We’re almost there. Spring is finally here (maybe?) and this time it may be here to stay!

As bears start waking and crawling out of hibernation, it seems like our friends at Netflix have not been resting at all throughout this long and arduous winter. They keep pushing out more and more shows, and the quality keeps getting better! Let’s see what’s in store this coming month for all you Netflixers.

Notable New Releases

  • Trollhunters: Season 3— a fun animated show fit for the whole family from Guillermo del Toro and DreamWorks. The show follows an unlikely hero, a teenage boy named Jim, who finds a mysterious amulet and comes across a mysterious realm inhabited by trolls and magical creatures. Jim is just a teenager but is now tasked with protecting his home from dangerous monsters who lurk below. This is a must-see for children and adults alike!

  • The Toys That Made Us: Season 2— if you are a fan of toys (who isn’t?), then you would love this Netflix original. The first season focused on Star Wars, Barbie, G.I. Joe and He-Man. This next season will do a deep dive on Transformers, Star Trek, LEGO and Hello Kitty.

  • Dear White People: Volume 2 — this may be a touchy subject for most people, but Netflix sheds a totally satirical light on the topic of racial tensions on college campuses. The new season deals with campus groups, the use of police force, and sexual tensions among other topics challenging college students these days.

  • Cargo — one of my favourite actors, Martin Freeman, stars as a virus-infected father who has 48 hours to live and save his daughter from dying in a wasteland. Great acting and an interesting plot line, perfect for a Friday evening!

The Highlights

  • Coco — I haven’t met anyone who didn’t like this movie yet. This is another Pixar masterpiece, focusing on the importance of being true to oneself and being true to family. The photography and illustrations were amazing to watch and truly brings Mexican folklore to life.

  • The Bourne Ultimatum — if you are an action junkie like me, the Jason Bourne series coming to Netflix is something to get excited about. This is the third movie of the franchise that grossed over US $1.6 billion at worldwide box offices, so if you haven’t seen it yet, do it. If you have, turn it on again!

Throwbacks

  • Scream 2 — they don’t make slasher films like they used to, and the Scream franchise was arguably the grandmother of all slashers. Neve Campbell, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Courteney Cox put on quite a show trying to escape the next incarnation of Ghostface. Who is behind the mask? Dun dun dun…

  • Shrek — who doesn’t love the friendly green giant? Not Hulk…I’m talking about the fun-loving, smart-aleck, all-around cuddly bear, Shrek! The original Shrek was made in 2001 with Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy and captured the hearts of many, spawning several stories and sequels afterward. If your kids are getting jumpy, put on Shrek and they’ll settle down for a few hours (at least).

  • The 40-Year-Old Virgin — I love Steve Carell. Like, literally, this guy can do no wrong. This Golden Globe recipient plays Andy, a middle-aged man played by Carell on a quest to find the woman of his dreams and lose his virginity along the way. Ranked as one of the best romantic comedies of all time, this is a classic for all comedy lovers.
